  1. What is VIRR and why is it a cheaper entry fee?
    VIRR stands for The Valley Isle Road Runners club, which is the local running club on Maui. The entry fee is discounted for members of VIRR because VIRR owns Maui Marathon and it many of the volunteers from VIRR have helped make Maui Marathon what it is today.   2. Is the Maui Marathon a Boston Marathon qualifier?
    Yes, the Maui Marathon is a Boston qualifier.
  3. Is the Maui Marathon USAT&F certified?
    Yes, the marathon and the half marathon are USAT&F certified and IAAF certified.
  4. Can I wear headphones during the race?
    We do not recommend usage of any audio equipment during the race on either the half or full marathons for safety reasons. Both courses are narrow in some areas and face vehicular traffic. If you want to use an audio device, you may do so but at your own risk.
  5. Will I receive a confirmation card after I send in my entry form?
    You will not receive a confirmation post card for any event or for the carbo load party . If you register on-line please keep a copy of your confirmation email received after completing the registration process.   6. What happens if for some reason I need to cancel out of the race?
    To qualify for a roll over entry to next year you must comply with all requirements as
    specified in our roll over policy. After reading our roll over policy if you meet the requirements, you may roll over your entry to next year by emailing confirmations@mauimarathon.com and letting us know you wish to roll over your entry.
  7. What if I wish to change from the half marathon to the full marathon?
    IF there is space available you may change from the half to the full by paying the difference in entry fee at the time of change, plus a $15 processing fee.
  8. What if I wish to change from the full marathon to the half marathon?
    IF there is space available in the half you may change from the full to the half for a $5 processing fee. There will be no refund for any difference in fees.
  9. Can I change from the full or the half to the Maui Tacos 5K or can I change from the Maui Tacos 5K to the full or half marathon?
    No, you may not change to or from the Maui Tacos 5K to the full or half marathon.
  10. Do I get a tee shirt from the full or half marathon?
    Only finishers of the half or full marathon receive a tee shirt.In some cases the t-shirt is given to registered runners at the Expo.
  11. My family will be with me. What events can my children participate in?
    Children are welcome to participate in the Hard Rock Cafe 10k, Maui Tacos 5K or the Front Street Mile. Children race against kids of similar ages in the Front Street Mile. Children who participate in the 5K and 10k will participate with all entrants.
  12. Will there be any elite athletes participating in any events?
    The Front Street Mile has an elite category which participants must qualify for. Men must have recorded a 4:05 mile and women must have recorded a 4:45 mile.  Elite athletes may be in the other various events.   Email if you feel you qualify as an elite athlete and event management may be able to assist in your attendance. 
  13. During the full and half marathon, will my family be able to see me out on the course?
    Family and friends will have access to 95% of the course to cheer you on. Roads all along the course will be open with the exception of Front Street in Lahaina. Side streets will still be open for friends and family to park on and then walk to Front Street to cheer you on. The road at the start of the full marathon is closed to traffic for about the first mile. For more details

  14. How many aid stations will there be?
    The full marathon will have a total of 20 aid stations, including the start and finish. The half marathon will have a total of 9 aid stations, including the start and finish. The 5K will have 3 aid stations including the start and finish. The 10k will have 4.   For more details

  15. What if I can’t finish the race?
    There will be SAG vehicles all along the full and half marathon course. If you are unable to finish they will drive you back to the finish area or to the next aid station.
  16. Is there a time limit in which to complete the marathon and half marathon courses?
    There is a time limit of 8 hours for the marathon. There is also a time limit of 8 hours for the half marathon because that is when the finish line closes down (however we encourage all participants to be fit enough to finish within 4 hours for the Half marathon). The SAG vehicles reserve the right to pickup runners who fall behind the pace required to complete the course within the specified time.
  17. If I can’t finish the marathon or half marathon will I still get a tee shirt and medal?
    No, medals are only given to finishers.  T’shirts will be given at expo.
  18. What will the weather be like?
    Temperature for the start is usually in the high 60′s, increasing to mid to high 80′s by 10:00am.
  19. Will I get a tee shirt from the 5K?
    5K tee shirts are handed out when you pick up your race number. We can only guarantee tee shirts to those who enter before September 1st.
  20. How can I purchase carbo load tickets?
    You may request the tickets on your entry form or online . If you have already entered you may send an email to
    confirmations@mauimarathonhawaii.com with your name, credit card information and how many tickets you would like. You may also print out the entry form, fill in your name, address, payment information, mark down how many carbo load tickets you wish and then fax or mail the entry form to the marathon. You may purchase carbo load tickets Friday afternoon at the Expo if there are tickets available. We do expect the carbo load to sell out ahead of time. The carbo load is Friday night beginning at 6:00pm for the second sitting, at The Westin Maui, race headquarters.
  21. Where can I pickup the carbo load tickets?
    Participants who have purchased tickets to the carbo load party must attend the expo to pick up the actual ticket. These will be available at the information booth at the expo beginning from 12:00pm on the Friday and Saturday at 9:00am before the race. You may not pick up your tickets at the entrance to the carbo load. The carbo load is Saturday night beginning at 6:00 p.m. at The Westin Maui, race headquarters.
  22. Do you have any additional marathon course, start and finish line information?

  23. Are strollers allowed on either the marathon or half marathon courses?
    Due to safety, strollers are not permitted on the marathon or half marathon courses.
  24. How hot and humid does it get on race day?
    Please see our
    temperature and humidity graph from a previous September race day. Remember the marathon & half marathon both start at 5:30 am.
